Interview

Having seen Aliceissleeping play live on several occasions, and being blown away every time, we couldn't wait to get an interview with Alice herself:

ANDY - Let's start with the band introductions. Who's who in the band?

ALICE - There's me (Alice Dionis) on lead vocals and bass, Daniele Murroni - guitars and backing vocals and Jonathan Hare-Winton on the drums.

ANDY - A real power trio, indeed! So, how did you all get together?

ALICE - It started very slowly. I was in a phase of total disengagement from music since the break up of my previous band (MAB). I took it very hard and I wasn't sure I could still do it, but Dan convinced me to record some songs that I had previously written, so we started recording in 2017 with the help of a friend who recorded the drums remotely in Sardinia. But the wake-up called arrived in June 2018 when we had our first gig as Aliceissleeping at the Water Rats. It was my first time on stage since 2013 - my hands were shaking, it was so emotional; and I loved it! I knew it was time to get going again so we started to look for a drummer. It was a long search, we gigged with the help of a friend and session drummers throughout 2018 until we finally found our beating heart, Jon! He answered an advert we put on Gumtree and it was love at first sound!  He loved our songs and we loved his style, it was perfect for us. Plus we live only 10 minutes away from each other which is crazy in a big city like London. We have had this line-up since April 2019.

ANDY - So I guess those few years of uncertainty was the inspiration for the band name?

ALICE - Yes, it came from the lethargic state I was in during the years I spent away from music. I knew I still loved it but it was a path that for me became too hard to take, too painful. So, ‘Alice is sleeping’ was something I kept telling myself to remind me I wasn’t dead. But was I?  My sleep was without dreams or hopes until I finally broke free and gave it another chance. It was not easy, but I made it. The bond in this band is strong and it shines across the music we make together. Now the sleep is full of dreams and hope, believe me!

ANDY - I understand, and now there is no looking back. You really can hear your passion for the songs, which makes me wonder, are you the driving force that makes most of the decisions in the band?

ALICE - Hahaha, Dan says it is, but I don't think so. (well, of course It’s me, I’m the woman! Haha). Actually, we are very close and we take our decisions together. We are all very committed to the band and we want to put in as much of ourselves as possible, both musically and visually.

ANDY - That certainly comes across in your live performances. You have sculpted a unique sound to your songs, but what or who are your musical influences?

ALICE - Oh! So many! We all grew up in the 90s so we have been strongly influenced by metal music in all its shades, and grunge, but we also share a passion for Queen (in their early years especially) and 70s rock.

ANDY - Yes, I can hear the Queen influence in your last single release, Brian's Tale. It has a progressive feel, with lots of dynamics. How do you go about writing new material – is there a main songwriter, or is it more of a band effort?

ALICE - It varies, there are songs I have written myself and then arranged all together in the studio, and others which started as a jam. I write all the lyrics and melodies, Dan is the guitar master! He can do anything he wants with it and he’s always able to write the perfect arrangement/riff for a song. Jon binds it all together beautifully; he always has great ideas, having had so much experience playing many different genres, he can really make each song sound cool!

ANDY - Well, it certainly shows, as you are so well rehearsed on stage. How often do you manage to practice?

ALICE - We normally rehearse once a week, we have our own studio so luckily if we need extra practice or we are working on new material, we can go more often.

ANDY - Where can I come and see you next? What gigs do you have coming up

ALICE - We have gigs planned up to June for now: April 15th (New Cross Inn), May 7th (Tooting Tram and Social), May 30th (Bird’s Nest, Deptford) and June 18th (Unicorn, Camden), all in London. Unfortunately we are in the middle of a pandemic so we cannot guarantee they will, in fact, take place.  (*** As we publish this, the UK has been advised to obey "Social Distancing"  and all venues have been closed, due to the Coronavirus outbreak ***)

ANDY - The majority of your gigs are based in London, so how do you feel about the current music scene in the capital?

ALICE - We think it’s absolutely brilliant. There are so many talented musicians out there, and we are very happy to be part of such a bubbling scene. There are bands which are doing very well for themselves and luckily there are lots of opportunities for emerging acts to make their music heard thanks to the digital world. Nevertheless, the music business is still an unforgiving world, the industry is very shady these days, but very much part of the game.

We have seen a transition happening throughout the years, we are familiar with how it used to work, so we try to use the new tools that come available, keeping in mind that, in many ways, certain mechanisms are still very much out of our hands. Having said that, we are sure that if we keep going steady and keep focus on our target, we’ll definitely get there.

ANDY - I understand, because I also spent a few years in oblivion, and since returning back to the music scene last year, I have been impressed with the exciting new music being produced. In your opinion, what can we all do to help further improve this exciting underground scene?

ALICE - I think that bands and artists in general are very closed in their own world. I know this is absolutely normal, I was exactly like this years ago and I am not suggesting this isn't good to a certain extent. Being focused on your own project is vital for nourishing it, making it perfect, for progressing, for internal bonding (in case of bands) and to become more professional. But in my own view it does lead to self isolation and doesn’t show the bigger picture. I learned this the hard way, meaning that if it crumbles, you crumble with it and it is a devastating experience. I think that artists should support each other more, share this journey with fellow musicians which are going through the same things, most likely having the same fears, problems, and of course excitement and drive. We try to go and see as many gigs as possible, whenever we can. This enriches you as a musician and performer, it is inspiring and it helps everybody involved in the industry. I think if the scene was seen as less of a competition, this ride would be more friendly and the scene would improve a lot.

ANDY - I completely agree. In these days the bands are having to do everything themselves, so it is worth their while teaming up and working together to achieve the same goal. And what goals do you have? What does the future hold for Aliceissleeping?

ALICE - Our aspiration would be to grow our following so that we could play for larger audiences and reach bigger stages in due time. We know it’s hard but we love what we do and we do hope to share our music, feelings and passion with an ever growing number of people. We don’t know what the future holds, but we know we are determined, stubborn and absolutely obsessed with music so we’ll find our way through the scene and we will carve out our space.

ANDY - Now, it is no secret that you have been working on recording new songs for a forthcoming album. Do you have a propsed release date?

ALICE - We do not have a release date yet although we hope to bring it out after the summer.

ANDY - I can't wait for that! What can we expect from your new songs?

ALICE - Lots of passion, that’s for sure! The songs are very emotionally charged, some are very heavy, some are hypnotic and some are very dark. We put a lot of effort into this album, there was a lot of research in the sounds and the arrangements, but it’s also quite instinctive, crude and true.

ANDY - Sounds fantastic! Will there be a single released beforehand, to tease the album?

ALICE - We are thinking about it, it's not easy to pick one song as we like them all very much! Anyhow, surely there will be songs that we’ll try to push to get the album noticed before it’s official release.

ANDY - And what about recording new videos to accompany those songs? (the video for "Love Song" from your previous EP "Space Wanders And Bleeding Hearts" is great, for example)

ALICE - Yes, we have so many ideas for so many songs! We will definitely have videos to accompany the release of the album.

ANDY - Well, we want to be the first to review it once it is released. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions, and good luck for the summer.
