The Slow Cooked Bears
Album: Dawn To Dusk
Released 8th December 2023
The Slow Cooked Bears have tried something new and daring for their latest release. They spent a day at Temple Studios in London, and recorded six tracks for this live album, and filmed themselves in the process (which can be found on their YouTube channel). Their true talent and musicianship was put on the line with this project and they have risen to the challenge with absolute supremacy! The album has that raw energy that is present in their live performances, yet showcases the precision of a studio recording. These six new songs demonstrate the depth of authentic songwriting in the band, and carry their energy into new avenues for us to enjoy. A wonderful experience.

Okay You Win
Album: Live From The Pit
Released 8th December 2023
Okay You Win have given us a raw and explosive seven track monster, with "Live From The Pit." The album begins dark and slow, then unwinds like a powerful beast, surging and growling into the depths of a mighty rocky cavern! It emerges with some epic moments of release, down and dirty riffs, wailing solo moments that cut through the deep and raunchy rhythm section, and vocals that add raw power and depth to the songs. Although the band have only been together less than a year, their oneness shines through in their live shows, and this album is indicative of that camaraderie, presented as a punch in the face that we all need to wake up to the talent that is out there in the underground clubs. This is one not to be missed, so go and see them live as soon as you get chance.

HAWXX
Album: Earth Spit Blood Bones
Released 3rd November 2023
And so HAWXX have finally graced us with a full blown album! Throughout the last four years of recording singles, and EPs, they have exploded onto the metal/rock scene with some high action, quality appearances and plenty of big name interest (radio stations, music brands and magazines, etc). The culmination of their experiences has steered us to this album - one that forces itself into your psyche with big guitar and bass riffs, amazing solos, stunningly assured drumming and powerfully emotive vocals. The group have really pulled out all the stops with "Earth, Spit, Blood And Bone", tying together some of their previous hit singles along with some new and poignant album tracks, sculpting an LP that shouts out to be heard repeatedly and truly listened too. This isn't just background music to a mosh pit, this is serious "stand up and be counted" musicianship. A fantastic journey into morality and self fulfillment wrapped into an epic collection of songs. So, turn it up loud and prepare to be blown away!

Troy The Band
Single: Flesh Wound
Released 1st November 2023
After the massive success of their EP "The Blissful Unknown" in 2022, Troy The Band have returned to the studio to record an album, entitled "Cataclysm" in order to maintain that momentum. This single doesn't disappoint, and continues their unique style of dark and fuzz-heavy rock, with a growling intro, as moody as black tar, but as sickly sweet as dark treacle. The vocals swirl around, like a hot spoon into the mix, adding some lightness to the density, alongside warbling guitar solos that slice through the flesh of the song. This is a heavy, thick, delicious, taste of what is to come from Troy The Band, and we cannot wait to indulge further in their chunky delights.

Dirty Sound Magnet
Album: Dreaming In Dystopia
Released 20th October 2023
The latest album from Dirty Sound Magnet draws more on their psychedelic influences and has steered away from the heavy blues/rock style of their previous album DSM-III. This album has a more gentle and playful feel, whilst still maintaining their skillful approach to writing. There are still those elements of questioning, with a subtle tongue-in-cheek commentary on society, but it entertainingly harks back to that 1960s style quirkiness. However the album still feels modern, and contemporary as the band explore further strings to their stylistic bow. This album may bring together both the dreamy visions of a desired future, with the fears for a dystopian nightmare that we are facing, but never fails to raise a smile in the process, taking it all in the band's stride. Sit back and let the world pass you by!

The Rhubarb
Album: Symptom Of Failure
Released 24th March 2023
"We're all doomed!" If Private Frazer from Dad's Army (played by John Laurie) were still alive, this would arguably be his favourite album! The Rhubarb are a four-piece from Glasgow, and describe their sound as stoner/doom with psychedelic tendencies. Sean Macguire shares the vocals with bassist Hannah White and the combination is like fairy liquid cutting through oil; the dark grizzly male voice feeding the heavy fuzz-drenched guitar (played by Michael McConville) whilst the "Liz Fraser" (Cocteau Twins) style choral vocals of Hannah just slice through the denseness with ease. This makes much of this album delightfully unsettling, with that juxtaposition of monsters and angels always tugging at your senses. The deep and primordial drumming of Jack Donnelly keeps the songs thundering along, complete with tempo changes and double bass-pedal flurries that maintain the sense of foreboding, yet still leaves us anticipating their next move. The stunning production work by Kevin Hare (Deep Storm Studios) adds depth and thickness to the music, whilst allowing enough space for the contrasting vocals to shine through. This album is at times gloriously haunting, moody and intimidating, but also invigorating, with some moments even feeling like a religious experience anticipating the rapture! So, close the curtains, turn off the lights and sit back whilst The Rhubarb takes you on a journey of contemplation. And there are some killer guitar solos thrown in too!

Sound Of Smoke
Album: PHASES
Released 24th February 2023
German rock bands have been leading the way in the stoner/doom/desert-rock genres for many years now, but here we have Sound Of Smoke displaying a more hippy, psychedelic blues edge. Hailing from Freiburg, the band consists of Isabelle Bapte (vocals and keyboards), Jens Stover (guitar), Florian Kiefer (bass) and Johannes Braunstein (drums).
The vast atmosphere created by the band throughout this album is stunning, with jangling guitar riffs crying out (interspersed with cyclical solos), over luscious, catchy bass-lines and almost jazz-like, expertly laid-back drum patterns. The cherry on the top of the cake, is undoubtedly the soft yet powerful vocals from Isabelle, who effortlessly sings us a delicate lullaby before breaking into an ecstatic choral embrace. The eleven songs on offer all stand strong, with each having their own ambience and vibe that summons the summer sun into view, wherever and whenever you may be listening. The tone and feel of this album just seems immaculate, with all the instruments weaving the perfect tapestry of music, finished off by the intricate embroidery of the vocals, giving us an exquisite collection of songs that I will be continually going back to again and again!

New Pagans
Album: Making Circles Of Our Own
Released 17th February 2023
Belfast's New Pagans have produced a truly beautiful album here, with "Making Our Own Circles" displaying their continued ability to write uplifting and inspiring pop songs. They write with intelligence and finesse, avoiding the standard verse/chorus approach, whilst maintaining the self-enclosed structure that keeps each song separate and original. The core of the inspiring feel to this album is the expeditious drum work of Conor McAuley, combined with the assured bass of Claire Miskimmin, which provide the perfect backdrop for the twin guitar rush of Cahir O'Doherty and Allan McGreevy, interweaving melodies and subtle effects to achieve a musical tapestry. To complete the composition we have the sublime vocals of Lyndsey McDougall that permeate your senses, sweeping you into some romantic idyll, crowning this wonderful musical ensemble. Where their fantastic debut LP had brief moments of introspective melancholy mixed in, this album shines with optimism and hope, breaking through the clouds into a sunny sky above.

Naut
Album: Hunt
Released 24th February 2023
Do you know that there is a thriving Goth/Post-Punk underground scene in Bristol? In fact, they even have a hand-made DIY fanzine (called "Kodak Ghosts Run Amok - find it on Facebook) which is where I first heard about Naut, a few years ago. Since their first single/EP releases they have really honed their skills and matured into a seriously solid band. Their first full album superbly displays this as we embark on a mighty "Hunt" into (in my mind, anyway) a fabled, mystical world. The album opener "Dissent" is fast paced and persistent, as we imagine a heroic charachter racing across the vast plains, riding a mechanical horse, in search of the mythical creature that has been laying waste to the surrounding towns. As our hero faces a vast, gaping canyon we dismount our steed, flowing into "All The Days" gazing down the steep cliff face that must be tackled on this quest. The rocks are as sharp and treacherous (like the the guitar: twisting and writhing), as we descend to the valley floor and face "Gold & Death." Searching the fast flowing river and mountainous boulders for clues as to the whereabouts of the beast, the hero stumbles upon the open mouth of a massive cavern. As we head into "Damocles" we see the bones of a thousand victims strewn before the entrance, but still our courageous knight boldly ventures into the unknown. Following long dark tunnels, the fire from the hero's torch casts frightening shadows across the walls, before the convoluted maze opens into a giant cavern, wherein the beast lies sleeping. As we listen to "8 in 3" we hear the monster wake in fury, and the dance between our protagonist begins in earnest, each striking blows, weakening the other, holding back for the next attack. The fight is formidable as each strives to take advantage of the other's weakness, before finally, wounded and exhausted, the beast retreats. "Unity Of Opposites" rings out as the hero falters, falling against the wall , the torch light barely flickering, struggling to stay lit. Resting and regaining strength, the victor must somehow summon the last remnant of energy for the journey home. "Nightfall" greets the hero, back in the valley, but the danger is not over. The creatures of the night are on the prowl, and eager to dominate the debilitated conqueror. The frantic pursuit tests the hero's stamina, who must utilise all the cunning and guile possessed, in order to make it out of the deep canyon alive. Although not easy, the escape is successful, and the after the long journey home the hero is summoned before the "Watchers," the elders of the village. The tale of victory is recounted for all the townsfolk to hear and there is much rejoicing, chanting and prayers to the mighty gods of old. Our hero is the champion once more.......This album conjures up tales galore, clutching and tugging at your imagination, so just sit back and let it all play out in your mind!
Okay, so I indulged myself, there, but this album is faced paced, adventurous and dynamic from start to finish. It does not let up with the driving bass-lines and often dance-able drum patterns, complimented by the angular and twisting guitar licks that keep you guessing and wanting more. The vocals are deep and moody, but maintain the positivity demonstrated in the songs; all given an extra dimension by the swirling, haunting synths that run majestically through the tapestry of sound. A truly masterful piece of work from this hard working and resolute band. Congratulations on creating such a great album.

8snake
Single: "The Unreliable"
Released 27th January 2023
The latest single from London-based progressive outfit 8Snake is a dark and deep foray into the claustrophobic mind of someone stuck in the rinse and repeat habits of a society obsessed with addictions and fame/fortune. There is the underlying desire to break free from the torment of always striving for success, to a simpler, unrestricted world. The vocals are deep and moody, the guitar is biting and searching, whilst the drums and bass underline the urgency to break free. There is more to life than constant struggle, and this song is reaching out to grasp the thin tether that can provide the necessary leverage of deliverance.

FANCHON
Single: Preliminary
Released 3rd February 2023
"Preliminary" is the first single from Fanchon's upcoming EP entitled "Down Beside Me." The track mixes angular guitars, heavy grunge onslaught, with soft-but-powerful vocals that cut through the mix, perfectly complimenting the theme of the lyrics. The band explain the song is based around the juxtaposition of the creative and the destructive sides of beginning an intense new romantic relationship; a contrast between the beautiful and the dark. And that sums up this song - both delicate and forceful, but always feeling necessary and emotional.

Free Spirits
Single: Deep In A Hole
Released 3rd February 2023
Free Spirits embody that archetypal indie/britpop, mixed with grunge, style that epitomised the 90s UK music scene. And the Mariani brothers (Carlo and Lucas) come from good stock, having formerly been members of Hurricane #1, before continuing their musical journey by forming Free Spirits. As the title suggests, this song tackles the emotional problems caused by isolation and loneliness combined with thoughts of fear for the future. Although the track hides an under-current of anxiety, it is still positive and upbeat enough to help you cope with the tough times, giving you that incentive to push through it all. Taken from the forthcoming album "The Upside Down" this is a raw and intense single that demonstrates just why the band have gained such a following around the US and Europe.

A.J. Kaufmann
Album: Bard's Woman In The Cool Of The Summer Breeze
Released 14th February 2023
In the depth of winter we are treated to a ray of sunshine with this folk-style album from the eclectic and productive A.J. Kaufmann. The Polish song-writer and poet has created a beautiful album, which begins with a flourish of eastern mysticism in "Globetrotter" - resplendent with flutes and strings harking back to that optimistic feel of the sixties summer of love. That theme continues through some of the other tracks, such as the 'groovy baby' vibe of "Saturation" and the hauntingly alluring "King of Kreuzberg." But it wouldn't be an A.J. Kaufmann album if he didn't mix it up a little, with some tracks inclining towards the softer acoustic style of 'Donovan' (such as "Mighty River" and "Little Whip" which also skillfully amalgamates a little 'Incredible String Band' kind of elegance), then there is the laid back, almost melancholic calmness that was popularised by 'Nick Drake' ("Utopian Fields," "With The Sun In Your Belly" and "Patricia - Gypsy Caravan Rollin'"). "Aurora" is an intense ballad, both breathless and profound, whilst the more quirky "Harry Haller" feels like it could have been written by 'Syd Barret' during his brief solo career. "Bard's Woman In The Cool Of The Breeze" is one of those rewarding albums where the more you listen the greater the experience becomes; it's mellow aesthetic does not betray it's ability to reach directly into the inspired heart of the 60s folk rock scene and bring that vibe back into our modern age to be enjoyed anew. So, here on this cold, dark February night, I am gently floating into a blissful summer dream. Thank you A.J. Kaufmann!

Ignu
Single: Orisen To Light/Ascension
Released 16th January 2023: Ignu begin their year with a progressive, eight minute journey into the cosmos and beyond. It begins with computer sounds and an AI voice prepping us for take-off, before psychedelic guitar notes introduce the mellow vocals. An acoustic guitar then joins in, above swooshing cymbals, flooding the speakers with a swirling vibe that helps lifts us upwards. The song builds up with crystal clear production and perfect reverb up to the 4 minute mark. Then suddenly, expecting the song to explode into an onslaught of fuzz overdrive, we are instead treated to a groovy folk refrain, complete with flutes, funky clean guitars and super catchy vocals. This song is a refreshing and welcome change, positive and upbeat "Riding just to meet our destiny" with an underlying nod towards human ascension (a topic very close to my heart, I must admit!). "Orisen To Light/Ascension" will keep you coming back for more, especially that change of tempo mid way through. A delight!

A delight!

Black Sky Giant
Album: Primigenian
Released 1st January 2023: Black Sky Giant hail from Argentina, and "Primigenian" is already their fifth album in only three years. Such is the talent on display by this band, that even though there are no vocals, there is enough musicality to keep you interested throughout the album. This is a fantastic sonic adventure, the soundtrack to your expedition into the unknown, your audio companion of discovery as the world's fantasies are slowly uncovered. The title track opens the album with an explosion of psychedelia - hooky bass riffs drizzled over ice cool drumming, with a generous sprinkling of delay-heavy guitar licks, before we reach "At The Gates" which injects a little danger into the proceedings as we head deeper into the unknown. By the time we hit "Stardust" we find night has fallen, all is still and the sky is clear. The dance-like drum beat and jangling guitar riffs help us peacefully drift into the darkness, shedding all fear and apprehension, even though we cannot see what is before us. As the morning dawns we reach "The Great Hall" where we are greeted by epic statues of the ancient ones, staring stonily down upon us, as we explore the abandoned treasures of the past in a bid to uncover their hidden knowledge. How could such wonders have been created so long ago? Did the ancient ones receive other-worldly assistance? Could they summon powers which are sadly lost to us today? We ponder these "Sonic Thoughts" as our time in this strange land comes to an end, and the long journey home only exacerbates our curiosity. What will become of the knowledge we have discovered? Will it become the breeding ground for further debate and exploration, to bring us closer to the wisdom of all ages? We can only chart our findings and let the world decide how to proceed. We hope it will not be ignored, or stashed away in some dusty museum basement only to be rediscovered years later as "The Foundational Found Tapes."
So the true gift this album gives is the fueling of the imagination. No words are needed to be sung, to influence or guide our thoughts. All we need are the interweaving musical pathways to sweep us away. Magical!

Shockpowder
Single: The Drowning And The Sunset
Released 13th January 2023: This is the latest single from Shockpowder, their first of 2023. After a string of brilliant singles last year, this one doesn't disappoint either. Another blend of dream-like vocals drift temptingly over the incessant shoe-gaze onslaught of guitar and bass energy, with the drum patterns breaking the song into moments of melancholy, followed by a barrage of double-pedal kick, to keep us focused. The title is an evocative one, conjuring the image of floating in the middle of a calm ocean, with nothing in view except the blazing sun slowly setting over the horizon, mesmerising and yet both terrifying and beautiful to behold. We try not to let ourselves fall into slumber, and lash out, kicking our legs to simultaneously stay both afloat and awake!
"And all I have are my memories."

Solcura
Single: God Now
Released 13th January 2023: The latest single from Solcura is rooted in the grunge style, only much heavier. The song begins with loud, uncompromising drums and a grinding, growling bassline. The guitar effects build up quickly into a killer riff that borders on heavy metal. It is an intense introduction, before the vocals slice through the darkness like a banshee in the mist. The chorus is both punchy and probing, dealing with the struggle to find one's spirituality in a world full of lies and greed. There are a few twists during the four minutes of the song, including a powerful guitar solo, tempo change, crunching rhythm breakdown and memorable riffs. Solcura pull off the big, heavy sound without sounding pretentious and egotistical, giving us just the right amount of attitude to keep the song interesting. Their album, "Serotonin" was released back in August 2021

This Summit Fever
EP: Distraction Rituals
Released 28th April 2023
This review is being written......
From the start it's in your face! Drums and guitar and ferocious vocals, high speed drumming, cutting guitar riffs and great use of effects (which range from heavy fuzz distortion, wah wah, to clean delay and chorus) to achieve a full beefy sound. At times ear bleedingly heavy, then others haunting and ethereal. QUOTE: "about society’s tendency to ignore problems and focus on immediate pleasures instead. The EP opener “Messiah,” for example, is about humanity being distracted by things that don’t truly matter while politicians push unsavory legislation. “The Widow,” meanwhile, explores the occasional value in distraction—especially following the death of a loved one.
