I began this online magazine in 2019, as a way of giving some small amount of exposure to some great unsigned/independent-label bands. Having recently joined a band after a few years out of the loop, I noticed how important it is for these bands to get any kind of feedback in a diminished music industry. It has become apparent that the DIY mentality first demonstrated during the late 70s punk era (continuing through to the Indie scene of the 90s) is the only way that rock bands can continue to make their music in this modern era. The rise of the internet, and social media, has made it easier to distribute content (does anyone remember the old days of packing up cassettes and CDs in envelopes?), but it is always difficult to be noticed on the over-saturated web.
I realised that a well-written review could help to advertise a band, giving them something to show for all their hard work, so I set about creating "The Uncarved Block" for just that reason. Over the year I have had the privilege to hear, see and meet many fantastic bands, and have endeavoured to write as much as possible. Having a full-time job, a family and my own band, it has proven difficult at times to keep up with the amount of amazing music being made, but I am doing what I can - it may only be a small contribution, but I firmly believe that it all helps.
So, I would like to thank you for reading my reviews and articles, and if you get the opportunity I would be grateful (on behalf of all the bands) if you would circulate these articles to everyone who you feel may be interested in this genre of music, so we can together spread the message that alt/rock/grunge/punk/whatever-you-want-to-call-it is making a resurgent come-back. Let's make it happen, ourselves!
